2013 China Earthquake

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2013/04/21/at-least-180-killed-after-earthquake-strikes-china-sichuan-region/

I chose to present the recent earthquake in China. This earthquake happened at 8:02 Beijing time on April 20, 2013. It's epicenter, or where the earthquake formed, was in Lushan County along the Longmenshan Fault. This is around where the 2008 earthquake struck, another fairly recent earthquake that caused great damage. This natural disaster had a magnitude of 7.0 by the Chinese Scale, and 6.6 by the US Scale. It had many aftershocks and 186 people were found dead, 21 are missing, and at least 11,248 are injured (852 of those injuries are serious). Many buildings collapsed, many of those buildings being peoples' homes. Even the hospital was destroyed, so injured people had to camp out in tents in front of the building, unless the injury was serious. If the injury was bad enough, one had to be rushed to a hospital far away to receive further care. But, even if you weren't hurt, you would most likely be forced to move into a tent because homes and buildings, if not flattened, became incredibly unstable and damaged. Around 8,000 soldiers from the People's Liberation Army were sent out to the stricken area to help, along with 1,400 provincial rescue workers and 120 support vehicles. Still, several people complained that more could have been done to help those affected, since many were left without shelter and little to no water. April 27, 2013 was declared mourning day, a day in which those affected by the earthquake would be remembered. This disaster had a large impact on China.

Chinese PoemThe cloudy sky hangs above
a monster of the heavens.
A narrow path wanders through the landscape
trapping people between the wet paddies.
A water buffalo strongly pulling through
a farmer towed behind.
The smell of flowers lingers in the air
a breeze carrying it to far away lands.
Trees blowing furiously in the wind
as if trembling in the crisp winter air
under the clouded sky.

Excellent poem. What is the monster of the heavens? I think it's the clouds. Mr. Chester

MOSES
Moses was important in history in three significant ways: Exodus, Red Sea parting, and Ten Commandments. First, God asked Moses to free the Israelites from Egypt. Moses told Pharaoh that God wanted the Hebrews to leave Egypt, but Pharaoh denied. Moses performed acts to prove his God: turning water to blood, changing rods to serpents, and bringing frogs. Pharaoh's magicians could also do this. Pharaoh allowed the Israelites to go, but changed his mind. God brought Ten Plagues, including slaughter of the first born son. Second, parting the Red Sea was significant. After the Hebrew’s left Egypt, Pharaoh sent an army that trapped them by the Red Sea. God divided the waters, allowing the Israelites to pass. God closed the waters on Pharaoh’s army. Lastly, the Ten Commandments were important. Moses went to Mount Sinai where he received God’s Ten Commandments. After forty days and nights, Moses returned to his camp and saw his people worshiping the Golden Calf. In anger, Moses broke the commandment tablets and ordered everyone in the camp killed. God told Moses to go back to the mountain to replace the broken tablets. These events prove that Moses was very influential in history, helping build Christianity.

LIFE
Life is a mountain,
with many twists and turns,
hard winds to knock you down,
many obstacles on the trail.
Sure it sometimes has meadows,
and a warm, sunny sky,
but it also has rain,
snow,
thunder,
lightning,
drops and ditches,
there just to trap you.
But don't stop hiking,
don't sit and rest,
keep pushing through,
and reach those sunny hills.
Don't wait in the dark.
Head towards the light.
Keep climbing,
and climbing,
and climbing,
because life is a mountain.

Good work on both. I really like your poem. 4's Mr. Chester
